Already available with five engine options for the 2014 model year, the Ford Fusion mid-size sedan will gain a 1.5-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost as well.

According to Ford Inside News, quoting “an internal document”, the 2014 Ford Fusion will be available in North America with the 1.5-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost powerplant that was recently launched on the Ford Mondeo in China. The new engine will also be available in the Mexican-built Fiesta later this year and our source claims it could be introduced on the Escape and Transit Connect models as well.

It's a internal Ford document detailing plans to launch a turbocharged 3-cylinder engine in its mid-size sedan.

Currently Ford offers a turbocharged 1.0-liter 3-cylinder Ecoboost engine in the Fiesta making a surprisingly solid 123 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. This engine, however, will be 50 percent larger, totaling 1.5-liters. Mated to a turbocharger it should deliver closer to 150 hp or more.

Ford’s most fuel efficient Fusion on offer at the moment is an EcoBoost 1.6-liter 4-cylinder making 178 hp and achieving 25 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. This new 3-cylinder will likely push the Fusion past the Altima’s segment-best 38 mpg highway rating.

Ford will continue to offer the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine, though it will be available exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission and will no longer offer start-stop technology. The 1.5-liter 3-cylinder EcoBoost will then get start-stop and be available only with a 6-speed automatic.

In addition to this fifth engine choice for the Fusion, Ford will offer a new base “S” model for the Fusion Hybrid, decontenting the car and offering it for a lower starting price. source: Autoguide.com Learn more 2014 Ford Fiesta 1.0L Review : How to Design ?
